These vine style tomato varieties (INDETERMINATE) are just what they sound like; a vine. Given the ideal conditions, they keep going, and going, and going until you tip them at their growing node, remove their source of energy or they get hit by a frost. These are the varieties you see growing in enormous hot houses with climate control – growing upwards of 10m! (They lay them on their side once the fruit is picked from the lower branches)
These plants grow best when the suckers are removed. This encourages upwards growth rather than rambling/sprawling off shoots that distract from the fruit formation.
Not ideal for pots or small areas, but great if you’ve got the room and have the time to train them a bit.
Definitely need to be staked or trained using a cage or trellis as they can really grow quite quickly when given good soil, lots of sun and plenty of water. Great for long seasons but do wonderfully here in the cool climates too since they usually grow quite quickly.
